10 Things to Do in Aggelochori
― the quiet village where the lagoon meets the sea ―

Aggelochori is the quiet end of the Thermaikos coastline — 31 km south of Thessaloniki, past Agia Triada and past the bulk of the summer crowd. What it has is a lagoon (the Aggelochori Lagoon, a recognized wetland), a beach that runs past a lighthouse, and the kind of pace that suggests the 21st century arrived here later and hasn't fully settled in yet. An excellent choice when you want the sea without the soundtrack of beach bars.
1. Walk to the Lighthouse Beach
The beach at Aggelochori ends at a small lighthouse on a sandy promontory. The walk along the shore to the lighthouse takes about 20 minutes. The water is calm and the beach is considerably quieter than the resorts to the north. The lighthouse itself is a modest structure but the coastal views from the promontory are excellent.
2. Explore the Aggelochori Lagoon
The lagoon behind the beach is a brackish shallow-water body separated from the sea by a sand bar. It attracts herons, egrets, and waders year-round, with more variety during migration. The lagoon shore is accessible via a track from the village — walk the perimeter in the morning for the best bird activity.
3. Birdwatching at the Lagoon
Little egret, grey heron, black-winged stilt, and Kentish plover are among the regular species at the Aggelochori lagoon. In spring migration, the variety increases significantly. Binoculars useful; telescope ideal. The early morning access is the most productive.
4. Swim on the Quiet Beach
The Aggelochori beach has a free, unorganised character — no sunbed infrastructure, no minimum spend, no beach bar soundtrack. Sandy, with calm shallow water. Some people find this preferable to the organised beach experience. Arrive any time; there's usually space even in August.
5. Watch the Sunset
The beach faces west across the Thermaic Gulf. Sunset here, with the lighthouse silhouette and the open water, is one of the most photogenic spots on the Thermaikos coastline. Arrive an hour before sunset and walk toward the lighthouse for the best angle.
6. Visit the Village Centre
Aggelochori village has a small square, a church, and a handful of local shops and kafenia. Quiet, genuinely local, unlikely to feature in a travel magazine. The kind of place that reminds you Greek village life continues between the peak-season tourist months.
7. Cycle the Coast Road
The coast road between Agia Triada and Aggelochori is bikeable and relatively flat. The 5 km coastal stretch runs close to the sea with periodic views. Bring a bike from Thessaloniki or rent from one of the seasonal hire shops in Agia Triada.
8. Find Potamos Beach (Nearby)
Potamos Beach (the beach of Epanomi) is a few kilometres further south. Similar in character to Aggelochori but slightly larger and with a small seasonal café. A good extension to an Aggelochori visit — combine both beaches in the same day.
9. Early Morning Swim (Beat the Heat)
The coast road from Thessaloniki is fast in the early morning. Arriving at Aggelochori for a 7:00 swim before it gets hot — in late June/July, the beach is typically deserted until 9:00 — and back in the city by 10:00 is entirely feasible. The reward: calm water, empty beach, early morning light.
10. Photography
The combination of lagoon, dunes, lighthouse, and open water gives Aggelochori more photographic variety than the standard beach resort. The flamingo pink of the lagoon at dawn (when light algae colours the water), the lighthouse at sunset, and the bird life at the lagoon edge are all worth a camera stop.
