Neoi Epivates Beach
― the closest real beach to Thessaloniki ―

Neoi Epivates sits 24 km south of central Thessaloniki — 33 minutes by car along the coastal road. That proximity makes it, by default, the beach that Thessalonians reach most reliably on a weekday afternoon or when there isn't enough time to drive to Chalkidiki. It's not the most beautiful beach in the region, but it does the job: sandy, shallow entry, facilities nearby, and close enough that you can leave the city at 17:00 and be in the water by 17:35.
The Beach
The beach at Neoi Epivates is a long stretch of coarse-to-medium sand facing the Thermaic Gulf. The water is calm — the gulf doesn't generate significant wave action — and very shallow, making it particularly good for children. Visibility in the water isn't exceptional (the sandy bottom stays stirred in calm conditions), but it's perfectly adequate for swimming.
The beach has a mix of organised sections with sunbed and umbrella rental (€8–12 per pair) and free public access areas. The organised sections are near the main access points; the free beach extends at the quieter ends. Arriving before 11:00 gives you good options for both.
What's Around
The waterfront road running behind the beach has the typical coastal strip: a pharmacy, mini-markets, seasonal beach bars and cafés, ice cream shops, and a couple of proper restaurants. There's a small playground near the main beach access for families. Parking along the road is free outside peak hours; it gets competitive on summer weekends by 10:00.
Compared to Nearby Beaches
Neoi Epivates is essentially the same experience as Peraia (2 km north, 22 km from Thessaloniki) — both are Thermaic Gulf beaches with similar sand, water, and infrastructure. Peraia has a slightly more developed promenade and more beach bars; Neoi Epivates is a little quieter. Agia Triada (27 km, 37 min) is busier with more restaurants and facilities. For anyone within Thessaloniki, the choice often comes down to which parking is available on arrival.

Best Time to Visit
June and September are better than July–August on weekends: the beach doesn't empty like Chalkidiki, but it also doesn't get as absurdly crowded. Weekday afternoons in July are often surprisingly quiet — the locals who want the sun are on the beach, but most visitors are in Chalkidiki. An excellent option when you want a quick swim without a significant time investment.
