The Kritzianon Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Saint Anastasia, is located in the area of Epanomi, on the road leading to Mesimeri and Nea Irakleia. Built in 1530, it stands as one of the oldest and best-preserved monastic dependencies (metochia) in Northern Greece. It is the only remaining structure of the medieval settlement of Kritzianon, making it a remarkable monument of cultural heritage.
Historical Significance and Strategic Location
The monastery’s strategic location allowed for the monitoring of the main road connecting Thessaloniki with Kassandra, while remaining hidden from the sea. This provided protection from the frequent pirate raids that plagued the region during that era.
The complex consists of a fortified enclosure with a five-sided defensive wall, strengthened by two towers. At its center lies the main tower-house, a square building with a ground floor and two upper levels, which served as the residence of the steward and the representative of the Monastery of Saint Anastasia.

Above the main gate of the tower-house, a historical inscription reads:
“IXN (Jesus Christ Conquers) During the Abbotship of Saint Anastasia Theonas Hieromonk, with Sofronios as Steward.”
This inscription indicates that Theonas, a prominent figure during the early Ottoman period, was the abbot of the Monastery of Saint Anastasia when the dependency was established.
Preservation and Current Condition
Despite the passage of centuries and the wear of time, the Kritzianon Monastery remains a significant historical landmark. Restoration and preservation efforts were carried out in 1976 and again in 1986-1987 by the Archaeological Service to safeguard its structure.
Today, the monastery serves as a unique destination for history and architecture enthusiasts. Visiting this site offers a rare glimpse into a bygone era and an opportunity to explore an important piece of Greece’s cultural heritage.
