Arnaia, Chalkidiki

― the best traditional village in Chalkidiki's mountain interior ―

Arnaia, Chalkidiki

Most visitors to Chalkidiki never go inland. They follow the coastal road to the beach and ignore the interior — which means they never discover Arnaia. The most beautiful traditional village in Chalkidiki sits at 600 metres elevation in the Cholomontas mountain range, surrounded by chestnut forests and stone-built Byzantine churches. It's 83 km from Thessaloniki, about 75 minutes, and it looks like a village that decided early on that keeping its character was more important than tourism. That restraint paid off.

Getting to Arnaia

Take the E75 south from Thessaloniki toward Chalkidiki. Before reaching Nea Moudania, look for signs to Polygyros (the capital of Chalkidiki) and then follow signs to Arnaia. The mountain road to Arnaia is scenic — expect 20 minutes of winding road from the main Chalkidiki highway. Total: 83 km, approximately 75 minutes.

The Village

Arnaia has preserved its traditional architecture more completely than almost any other village in northern Greece. The main square is lined with stone buildings, a working fountain, and kafenia where older men play backgammon on weekday mornings as if tourism hadn't been invented. The narrow lanes behind the square have traditional houses with wooden balconies, stone courtyard walls, and kitchen gardens. Walk without a destination and you'll find the most interesting corners.

Byzantine Churches

The village has several Byzantine churches, some dating from the 12th–14th centuries. The Church of Agios Stefanos is the most significant architecturally. Check if it's open — a local will often appear with a key if you ask. The frescoes inside several of the village churches are genuinely old and in remarkably good condition.

Chestnut Forest

The landscape around Arnaia is dominated by chestnut trees — unusual in the Greek context. In autumn (October–November), the forest turns golden and the chestnuts come into season. The village holds a chestnut festival in late October. If you visit in autumn, buy roasted chestnuts from one of the stalls on the main square and walk into the forest. This is not a summer beach destination; Arnaia works best in spring and autumn.

Food and Drink

The kafenia on the main square serve excellent Greek coffee and simple food. One or two tavernas in the village offer northern Greek mountain cuisine: beans, rabbit, grilled meats, and local wine. Nothing pretentious, everything honest. The honey produced around Arnaia is excellent — you'll find it at a shop near the square.

Combining with Polygyros

Polygyros, the capital of Chalkidiki, is 25 km south of Arnaia. A Polygyros has a good local market and a small but interesting archaeological museum. Combine the two for a half-day cultural trip into Chalkidiki's interior, then descend to the coast for an afternoon swim.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Arnaia from Thessaloniki?
Arnaia is 83 km from central Thessaloniki, approximately 75 minutes by car. The route goes south via Chalkidiki's main road then turns inland toward the Cholomontas mountain range. The last 20 km on the mountain road is winding but well-paved.
What is Arnaia Chalkidiki known for?
Arnaia is the best-preserved traditional village in Chalkidiki, known for its stone architecture, Byzantine churches, chestnut forests, and local mountain food. It's the interior antidote to the coastal resort scene — quiet, authentic, and remarkably unchanged from a generation ago.
When is the best time to visit Arnaia?
Spring (April–May) for wildflowers and green forest, or autumn (October–November) for the chestnut harvest and golden foliage. The village also holds a chestnut festival in late October. Summer is less distinctive here — go to the coast in July–August and save Arnaia for shoulder seasons.
