Family Beaches Near Thessaloniki

Not all beaches near Thessaloniki work equally well with children in tow. Rocky entrances, deep water near the shore, parking chaos, and no shade can turn a beach day into a stressful expedition. These are the beaches that genuinely work for families: shallow water, sand underfoot, decent facilities nearby, and manageable logistics.
Agia Triada Beach — 27 km / 37 min
The closest organised beach to Thessaloniki with everything families need. The water is shallow for a long stretch, perfect for children who aren't confident swimmers. There's a long promenade with ice cream stalls, restaurants, and a playground nearby. Parking is easier than at more remote beaches. Gets busy on summer weekends but the beach is long enough to absorb it.
Nea Epivates — 24 km / 33 min
Just 2 km up the coast from Agia Triada, slightly less organised and consequently quieter. Shallow sandy entry, calm water, and a more local feel. If Agia Triada is full, Nea Epivates is the natural backup — you'll find the same kind of beach with fewer visitors. Some sections have sunbed rental; others are free beach.
Olympiaki Akti (Pieria) — 77 km / 62 min
Worth the hour drive for families: Olympiaki Akti has some of the shallowest and calmest water on any beach within day-trip range of Thessaloniki. The sea barely reaches chest height 30 metres from shore, making it one of the safest swimming spots for toddlers and young children. Long organised promenade with restaurants, watersports, playgrounds. Easy parking.
Fava Beach, Sithonia — ~105 km / ~88 min
Further than the others but worth mentioning: Fava's lagoon-like bay is exceptionally calm and shallow, with warm, clear water. The drive is longer, but the setting — a crescent of sand surrounded by hills — is genuinely magical. If you're doing a proper family beach day rather than a quick dip, Fava is in a different class than the nearer options.
Nea Kallikrateia — 44 km / 40 min
A quieter stretch of coast south of Epanomi, often overlooked. Sandy beach with gentle waves, some organised sections, and far less traffic than the Peraia–Agia Triada strip. A good option if you want a family beach without competing for space with Thessaloniki weekenders.
Tips for a Beach Day with Kids
- Arrive before 10:00 in July–August — the shade spots go first and parking fills up.
- Water shoes are worth packing even for sandy beaches; some areas have small rocks or sea urchins near the waterline.
- Beach umbrellas are cheaper to bring than to rent — a decent travel umbrella costs €15–20 and pays for itself in two outings.
- The beaches around Peraia and Agia Triada have pharmacies and a medical centre nearby — reassuring for families with very young children.
