Platamon Castle Day Trip
― a Crusader castle above the sea, 85 km from Thessaloniki ―

Platamon Castle looks like a medieval fantasy planted on a cliff above the Aegean — a perfectly preserved Crusader fortress perched where the Olympus slopes meet the sea, with the railway line (and this is somehow not distracting but charming) running right below it. The castle is 85 km from Thessaloniki, about 70 minutes, and sits next to one of the better beaches on the Pieria coast. Most people drive past it on the motorway and don't stop. They're wrong to skip it.
Getting There
From Thessaloniki, take the E75/A1 south. Exit for "Πλαταμώνας / Platamon" approximately at km 85. The castle is visible from the motorway and easy to find — drive through the town of Platamon and follow signs up the hill. Free parking below the castle entrance. Total: 85 km, about 70 minutes.
The Castle
Built by the Crusaders in the early 13th century on earlier Byzantine foundations, Platamon Castle is in unusually good condition. The keep stands to full height, the walls are mostly intact, and you can walk the full circuit of the battlements. The views from the top are stunning: the Thermaic Gulf below, Olympus rising behind, and the Pieria coast stretching north.
The castle was significant during the medieval period as the guardian of the pass between Macedonia and Thessaly — the corridor that all armies had to pass through when moving between northern and southern Greece. The Macedonians, Byzantines, Crusaders, and Ottomans all fought over it. The architecture reflects several building phases.
The Beach
The beach at Platamon town, directly below the castle, is a long sandy stretch that's part of the wider Pieria coastline. The view from the beach looking up at the castle on the cliff is exceptional — one of the best beach-castle combinations in Greece. The beach has sunbeds and beach bar facilities in season. Water is calm and the bottom sandy. A good place to spend the afternoon after the castle visit.

Combining with Other Pieria Stops
Platamon is 12 km south of Litochoro — the base town for Olympus hiking. A natural full-day combination: morning at Dion Archaeological Park (92 km), lunch in Litochoro, afternoon at the Enipeas Gorge or Platamon Castle, evening swim at Plaka Litochoro beach. This covers the three main things to see in Pieria in a single long day.
