Weekend in Thessaloniki
― 48 hours in northern Greece's most liveable city ―

Thessaloniki runs on a different schedule from the rest of Greece. The city wakes up late, eats late, and goes to bed very late — a rhythm that works perfectly for a weekend visit. Two days here is genuinely enough to understand why Thessalonikians are insufferably smug about where they live. Here's how to use them well.
Day 1: History and the Waterfront
Morning: Bougatsa and Byzantine Monuments
Start with bougatsa at a shop near your hotel — cream-filled filo pastry with cinnamon and sugar. Non-negotiable. Then walk to the Rotunda (10 min from most central hotels), which opens at 8:00. Early morning in the Rotunda, with light entering through the high windows onto those ancient mosaics, is one of the best experiences in northern Greece. Then to Agios Dimitrios basilica (15 min walk), then the Byzantine Museum (10 min from there).
Afternoon: The Waterfront and White Tower
Lunch at one of the fish restaurants near the port. Walk the waterfront east to the White Tower — it's a 20-minute walk and the seafront is pleasant. Visit the White Tower museum (1 hour), then continue east along the waterfront to Aristotelous Square for coffee. The square is the social centre of the city; spend an hour watching it.
Evening: Ladadika and Dinner
Walk or taxi to Ladadika, the old warehouse district now full of restaurants. Dinner at a traditional taverna — Greek mezes, wine, the extended format that takes 2–3 hours as a feature rather than a bug. The neighbourhood is most alive from 21:00 onward.
Day 2: Ano Poli, Panorama, and Beach
Morning: Ano Poli (Upper Town)
Taxi up to Ano Poli — the preserved upper town inside the Byzantine walls. Walk the walls and the lanes slowly, stopping at whichever kafenio looks inviting for a Greek coffee. The views over the city are excellent. Walk down — it's 30–45 minutes of downhill through the old neighbourhoods. The Archaeological Museum is on your path down; if you haven't been, spend 1.5 hours.
Afternoon: Panorama (Optional) or Beach
If the weather is good: drive 17 minutes to the beach at Nea Epivates or Peraia for an afternoon swim. The Thermaikos coast is 20–30 minutes from central Thessaloniki and an entirely normal afternoon option for residents. If you prefer: drive up to Panorama (17 min) for the view and more bougatsa from the hilltop shops.
Evening: Modiano Market Area
The Modiano and Kapani covered markets open for evening shopping and eating in the surrounding restaurants. This is the best area for local food: meze bars, grilled meat, octopus, and the kind of meal that costs €15 per person and is memorable. Finish with a walk back along Egnatia Street.
Practical Notes
- Book accommodation on or near Egnatia Street (the main spine) or the waterfront — walking distance to everything.
- Thessaloniki has excellent Airbnb options; many restored apartment buildings in Ano Poli and the market area.
- A car is useful on Day 2 for the beach or Panorama excursion, but Day 1 is entirely walkable.
- Avoid August weekends if you're sensitive to heat — the city temperature regularly exceeds 35°C. The coast is much more comfortable.
