Camping Near Thermaikos
― sleep by the sea without driving to Chalkidiki ―

Camping near Thermaikos means being on the coast south of Thessaloniki without the 65+ km drive to Chalkidiki. The Thermaic Gulf coast has several organised campsites between Thessaloniki Airport and Epanomi — close enough to the city to arrive after work on a Friday, far enough to feel like you've left. The sea is calm, the facilities are adequate, and the price point is significantly lower than equivalent camping in Chalkidiki.
Campsites on the Thermaikos Coast
Near Agia Triada (27 km from Thessaloniki)
The most accessible area for camping near the city. One or two organised campsites operate here in season, with direct or very close beach access, electricity hookups, and shared toilet/shower facilities. Price range: €10–18 per tent pitch plus per-person fee. Popular with Greek families in July–August — book or arrive early in peak season.
Near Epanomi / Potamos Beach (35 km)
A campsite near Potamos Beach (Epanomi) gives access to one of the quieter beaches on the Thermaikos coast. The Potamos area has more natural character than the northern resort strip. Facilities are basic; the trade-off is a quieter setting. Good option for solo travellers or couples who prefer fewer neighbours. The Gerovassiliou winery is nearby for evening visits.
What to Expect
Thermaikos campsites are typically Greek-style: unpretentious, functional, with the beach as the main feature. Don't expect manicured lawns or 5-star facilities. Expect: an electricity point, a cold-water shower, a toilet block, and a patch of ground under a tree (if you're lucky with shade). Some sites have a basic snack bar. The beach access is the main selling point, not the infrastructure.
Season
Campsites on the Thermaikos coast operate from late May through early October. Peak season is July–August when they fill quickly on weekends. June and September offer the best combination: warm enough to enjoy camping comfortably, quiet enough to find space without advance booking. October camping is possible but facilities start closing mid-month.
Wild Camping
As noted in the broader beach camping guide, wild camping on organised Greek beaches is technically prohibited. The unorganised beach areas south of Epanomi are more relaxed in practice, but the organised campsites offer a legal, comfortable, and inexpensive alternative. The price difference between a campsite pitch and potential enforcement issues makes the organised sites the sensible choice.
Logistics
- Supermarkets in Agia Triada and Epanomi stock everything you need for self-catering camping.
- The Thessaloniki–Epanomi road is straightforward: no mountain passes, minimal traffic outside peak hours.
- Mobile signal is good throughout the coast; most campsites have some WiFi.
- Car camping is the standard format — the sites are not easily reached by foot or public transport.
