Lake Volvi Day Trip from Thessaloniki
― northern Greece's largest lake, 39 km east of Thessaloniki ―

Lake Volvi is the larger of two lakes east of Thessaloniki — Lake Koronia is the other — and together they form a wetland system of remarkable ecological richness. Volvi is 39 km from central Thessaloniki, about 40 minutes east on the national road. It's not on most tourist itineraries (which makes it more appealing to those who find their way there), and it offers something genuinely different from the beach-and-ruins circuit: open water, migrating birds, hot springs, and a dramatic gorge connecting the lake to the coast.
Getting There
Take the national road (not motorway) east from Thessaloniki toward Kavala. After passing Sindos and Thessaloniki Airport, continue east through Rentina. Lake Volvi appears on your right. Total: 39 km, approximately 40 minutes. The lake road runs along the southern shore and has several stopping points.
Birdwatching
The Lakes Koronia-Volvi complex is one of the best birdwatching sites in northern Greece. Over 250 species have been recorded here, including great white pelicans, cormorants, herons, egrets, and several species of tern. Spring migration (March–May) and autumn migration (September–October) are peak times, but the lakes support a large year-round bird population. The ornithological station near Lake Koronia sometimes offers guided walks.
Hot Springs (Loutra Volvis)
On the north shore of the lake, the hot springs at Loutra Volvis have been used since antiquity. There are some basic facilities — outdoor thermal pools — open seasonally. The water temperature is around 40°C. Not a spa resort, more a local tradition. Check if facilities are operational before making a specific trip for the springs.
Rentina Gorge
The Rentina Gorge, just east of Lake Volvi, is where the Repentis river cuts through dramatic rock formations connecting the lake system to the coast. The gorge road offers striking views and there are some informal walking paths along the river. A good 30–45 minute stop on the way east or as part of a Volvi loop.
The Village of Apollonia
The lakeside village of Apollonia, on the north shore, is a pleasant stop: traditional houses, a church, and views across the water to the Cholomontas hills. Good for coffee and a simple lunch. The local fish (especially perch from the lake) occasionally appears on village taverna menus.
Combining with the Coast
Lake Volvi sits on the road between Thessaloniki and Kavala (and by extension the coast to the east). It's a natural stop if you're heading to Chalkidiki's east side or Kavala — or a standalone morning nature trip before returning to Thessaloniki for lunch.
